Dhaka, March 17 (bdnews24.com) -- The chief adviser's special assistant Mahbub Jamil Monday called on businesses to pay due attention to corporate social responsibility in an effort to alleviate sufferings of the poor.
Jamil, who oversees the industry ministry, said the government was thinking of making policy, involving Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institute to create awareness about social responsibility in businesses.
The CA's special aide Monday attended a workshop on corporate social responsibility" organised by Reed Consulting Bangladesh at BRAC Centre Inn.
Acting British high commissioner Duncan Norman, Dr Richard Welford of Hong Kong University and Reed Consulting Bangladesh chairman Rodney Reed also spoke.
Norman urged the government to work with the BSTI and other stakeholders throughout industry to ensure that Bangladesh fully understood the benefits of CSR and the implications of implementing ISO 26000 of the International Organisation for Standardisation.
Reed said implementation of the ISO 26000, expected to be declared in 2010, would work as an advantage for Bangladeshi companies to compete in the international market.
Jamil said: "Business enterprises are an essential part of society and … inevitably enter many areas of social life. Hence their, responsibility towards society and environment has emerged."
