The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has announced that it will organise monthly meetings with businesses and stakeholders in an effort to ease and facilitate Bangladesh’s business and commerce.
In a statement on Wednesday, the tax authority said the initiative, titled “Meet the Business”, will take place on the second Wednesday of every month at its headquarters in Dhaka's Agargaon. Ahead of the first session scheduled for Sept 10, the NBR sought information from businessmen who want to participate in the event.
Such events had previously been held when the NBR chairman had requested time from businesses or from leaders in several sectors. The NBR also held pre-budget discussions with stakeholders from different sectors in the month-and-a-half to two months prior to the announcement of the budget.
However, there was some criticism that such discussions were not held regularly throughout the year and that stakeholders often had to go from one government office to another in order to talk about the issues they were facing.
In response, the NBR has now decided to organise a special event every month to discuss the “various problems at the field level” faced by businesses and to take “effective measures” to resolve them.
“The National Board of Revenue has decided to exchange views with all stakeholders on the second Wednesday of every month, giving top priority to trade facilitation,” the agency said in its announcement.
“Business representatives will be able to attend this event and present the problems they face regarding customs, income tax and VAT at the field level directly to the chairman and members of the National Board of Revenue. In this way, the National Board of Revenue will be able to get a clear idea about the various problems at the field level and take effective measures to solve them.”
This month’s meeting will be held on Sept 10 at the Rajasya Bhaban in Dhaka’s Agargaon.
The NBR has sought information from business representatives who want to take part in the meeting.
Letters have been sent to the heads of 99 organisations in the public and private sectors. These include the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka (MCCI), Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI), Foreign Investors' Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission (BTC), Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA), and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP).
