25000 retrenched workers of Ctg industries in plight; city mayor gives 10 days' ultimatum

Chittagong, June 18(BDNEWS)- Chittagong city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury has demanded resumption of the production of closed mills and factories and reinstatement of nearly 25000 workers of Pahartali- Fouzderhat and Barabkunda industrial belts in Chittagong by next ten days.
He urged the Labour Director, Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of police, Chittagong to yield a positive decision to this effect by the stipulated time.
"Otherwise tough movement including all kinds of blockades will be launched to realize the demand" the mayor reiterated his warning while addressing a series of workers rally recently.
The mayor said nearly 25000 different kinds of workers who were retrenched in the said industrial belts had been passing their lives in inhuman state for years.
The arrears of the retrenched workers now stand at TK 34 crore and 12 lakh.
The mills and factories which have been shut down included: Chittagong Textile Mill Ltd, Ispahani Marshal Ltd, Jalil Textile Mills, Pylon Industries Ltd, Eagle Star Textile Ltd, Mutual Spinning Mills, Bengal Still Mills, Aroma Tea Ltd, AK Khan Jute Mills, Karim Pipes Ltd while Victory Jute Mills, Baghdad Dhaka Factory and Pahartali Textile Mills partly resumed its production.
The mayor said that he had already reminded joint labour director and respective owners of the mills and factories of the matter.
