Verdict on Mujaheed Wednesday

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 will deliver its verdict on Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammed Mujaheed on Wednesday -- two days after ICT-1 sentenced the party's former chief Ghulam Azam to 90 years in jail.

The ICT-2 completed hearing of the prosecution and the defence in the war crimes case against Mujaheed on June 5 this year.

But the tribunal issued a CAV (curia advisari vult or reserving the judgement until a later time).

Now it has decided to award the verdict on Mujaheed on Wednesday.

The tribunal chief, Justice Obaidul Hassan, and the two other judges, Justice Md Mujibur Rahman Mia and Judge Shahinur Islam, will be around to award the verdict with Mujahid in the dock.

Like other accused in war crimes cases, Mujaheed, 66, was tried under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act 1973.

Mujaheed faced the trial on seven counts of crimes against humanity, including genocide, murder, torture, conspiracy, planning incitement and complicity in atrocities during the 1971 Liberation War.

On June 29, 2010, Mujaheed was arrested on charges of defying court orders and was shown arrested in the war crimes case on August 2, 2010.

He was indicted on June 21, 2012 and his formal trial began on July 19, 2012.

The prosecution began its closing arguments on May 7 and concluded it primarily on May 16 and the defence began its closing arguments on May 22 and concluded on June 4.

Preosecutor Mokhlesur Rahman Badal had hoped to have 34 accusations in the seven charges against Mujahid proved.

The tribunal on Jun 21 indicted the Jamaat leader for allegedly committing crimes against humanity including murder, genocide, rape, arson and loot.
