Fulbari police said engines of both the trains and five compartments had been damaged in the collision.

Rail services to parts of northern Bangladesh have been snapped since 4am on Tuesday.

Khulna-bound Shimanto Express from Syedpur was waiting at the No. 1 line at Fulbari Railway Station.

Around 3:45am, Dinajpur-bound Ekota Express from Dhaka was cleared to enter the track and it rammed into the Shimanto Express, said Fulbari Police Station OC Rabiul Islam.

Fire Service and policemen rushed to the rescue.

Eight of the seriously injured have been admitted to the Fulbari Health Centre and four at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, OC Islam said.

Two compartments of Shimanto Express and three of Ekota Express have been damaged along with engines of both the trains.

But since the Ekata Express was slowing down to enter the station, the impact was perhaps less than would otherwise be the case.

On duty Assistant Station Master Abdul Hamid and Pointman Yunus went into hiding minutes after the accident.

A rescue train has started working at 8am to restore rail services.
