Madaripur, July 19 (BDNEWS) – People of Madaripur municipality have been deprived of minimum civil amenities.
The problems they are facing included lacking in supply of drinking water, frequent loadshedding, absence of proper drainage system, waste management and public toilets, unplanned and illegal infrastructure and above all dilapidated roads.
Local people said water crisis is persistent due to inadequate number of deep tube wells. The municipality could not meet even 25 percent of water demand from its six supply stations.
"The water being supplied by the pourasava is undrinkable, too," said Abdul Aleem, a town dweller.
People said that the drainage system is so vulnerable that water logging is very common in many parts of the town even after a scanty rain. Only four to five drains are too inadequate, they said.
Moreover, water logging has been taking a permanent shape in the town as unplanned and illegal establishments have been set up on and around three important canals, leased out by the municipal authorities.
Many areas in the town also became dens of muggers and other illegal activities in the eerie darkness as there is no light in most of the roads, said Shahidul Islam, a primary school teacher.
Dumping of waste materials helter skelter and lack of sufficient public toilets and slaughterhouses made the town unhygienic to live in and has been seriously threatening the dwellers with health hazards.
The most appalling is the condition of the dilapidated roads that are too unsuitable to be used even by the pedestrians, said Shammi Akhter, a class nine student.
The roads have not yet been repaired after the last flood.
Nurul Alam Babul Chowdhury, chairman of the municipality, said an allocation of Tk four crore has been made by the government to repair the roads.
"We already completed the tender procedures. The work would begin shortly," he told BDNEWS.
