Dhaka, Mar 25 (bdnews24.com) — The second war crimes tribunal began its proceedings on Sunday by disposing of a prosecution petition to arrest one Abul Kalam Azad alias Bachchu.
The tribunal ordered the prosecution to file a progress report on its investigation by Apr 2 upon which it will give further orders.
A former Jamaat-e-Islami activist (supposedly a member of the party's student wing), 64-year-old Bachchu was an accomplice of the party's secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed in Faridpur district during the 1971 Liberation War.
The three-member International Crimes Tribunal (2), set up on Thursday, sat for the first time marking the second anniversary of the first tribunal which was set up Mar 25, 2010.
The prosecution had petitioned the tribunal to issue an arrest warrant for Bachchu to facilitate its investigation.
The second tribunal is headed by Justice A T M Fazle Kabir, former member of ICT (1), Justice Obaidul Hassan and Judge Shahinur Islam, the former registrar.
Justice Fazle Kabir, who had been a member of ICT (1), has been appointed chairman of the second war crimes tribunal and replaced by Justice Mohammad Anwarul Haque.
Currently, the tribunal's deputy registrar, Mesbauddin Ahmed has been charged with filling in for his former boss.
