Dhaka, Nov 27 (bdnews24.com) — Campaigners have again demanded removal of illegal structures inside the Lalbagh Fort, Dhaka's major archaeological site.
Dhaka District Rovers and Poribesh Bachao Andolan at 11am on Saturday formed a human chain at the main entrance of the fort and organised a short protest rally.
Poba chairman Abu Naser Khan said, "Lalbagh Fort is the country's greatest archaeological treasure. A High Court decree has recently banned building of any new structure and change in the existing buildings."
There are at least 30 illegal constructions on the southwest wall of the fort. Some of them are inside the premises, he alleged.
The High Court on Oct 10 following a public interest petition ordered the government to conduct a survey for determining boundary of the fort and to evict structures inside it.
It also said a five-foot road must be constructed around the fort, and ordered the government to ensure no illegal construction is built.
Poba's Antiquities Protection Team convenor Samsul Wares said, "Different parts of the fort are being usurped, violating the Antiquities Act."
He said: "The fort's three-storied entrance, which is depicted on Tk 100 note, is now in a dilapidated state."
