Dhaka, Aug 23 (bdnews24.com)—The High Court has overturned a trial court verdict that had sentenced the chairman of a Jatiya Party faction, Anwar Hossain Manju, to seven years in prison in a corruption case.
The bench of justices Syed Mohammad Dastagir Hossain and AKM Zahirul Haque gave the verdict on Monday after hearing the appeal filed by Manju against the Dhaka's Special Judges Court's verdict.
On July 25, 2007 the Anticorruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Manju with the Shahbagh Police Station on charges of taking bribes.
According to the case details, Manju, also the former communications minister, received bribes worth Tk 7.5 million from a Taherul Islam.
On June 8, 2008 the special judge's court, set up by the military-installed caretaker government, sentenced Manju to seven years' imprisonment and ordered seizure of his assets.
Manju's lawyer Ahsanul Karim told reporters on Monday: "It is the third case against Manju that has been scrapped by the High Court." Advocate Habibullah stood for the ACC.
