Sylhet, June 16 (bdnews24.com)—Flood situation at eight sub-districts in Sylhet has worsened due to heavy rainfall and increased water flow from the upstream.
The affected areas are Bianibazar, Balaganj, South Surma, Goainghat, Kanaighat, Jokiganj, Fenchuganj and Gopalganj.
Road communications of Bianibazar and Jokiganj with Sylhet have been suspended since Monday as the highways were submerged.
The government has opened 23 flood shelters – 16 in Bianibazar, one in Balaganj, two in Fenchuganj, two in Gopalganj and two in South Surma.
Deputy commissioner Sajjadul Hasan on Wednesday noon told bdnews24.com that the authority was monitoring the flood situation from its flood control room.
Md Iqbal Hossain, duty official of the district administration flood control room, told bdnews24.com that eight Upazilas out of 11 had been affected.
Iqbal said that more than three lakh residents of the affected areas are marooned and suffering from lack of drinking water.
Almost 600 education institutions were forced to stop academic activities too.
Iqbal, also the deputy director of local government division, mentioned that the government had already allotted 359 tonnes of rice and Tk 7.47 lakh as cash assistance.
The district administration also distributed 670 sarees and 75 lungis.
Water was flowing above the danger level in Surma and Kushiara rivers on Wednesday. The situation was more severe along the Kushiara.
Sylhet Water Development Board's deputy divisional engineer Md Helal Uddin told bdnews24.com that the water of Surma was flowing 15 centimetres above the danger level at Sylhet point and 1.09 metres at Kanaighat point on Wednesday noon.
He also revealed that Kushiara was flowing 1.1 metres above the danger level at Jakiganj's Amalsid point and 87cms above at Bianibazar's Shewla point.
The official also said that 13mm rainfall was recorded in Sylhet, 16mm at Kanaighat and 46mm at Bianibazar.
