Police have secured authorisation to interrogate two suspects in custody over the murder of Rahat Hossain Rabbi, who was stabbed to death at a shisha bar in Dhaka’s Banani.
On Sunday, Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jennifer Jerin granted police three days to quiz A Malek Munna, and one day for Maksudur Rahman Hamza, following an application from the investigating officer.
Banani Police Sub-Inspector Amjad Sheikh sought 10 days to interrogate each suspect, while the defence lawyer Osman Gani petitioned for bail. The court granted a four-day interrogation following a hearing.
Munna and Hamza were arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion at Cumilla’s Barura on Friday.
On Friday, police detained four others in Banani -- Mir Hossain, 22, Fazle Rabbi, 24, Sabbir Ahmed Sumon, 30, and Arafat Islam Fahim, 27. A Dhaka magistrate ordered them into custody.
Rabbi, 31, a Mohakhali local, was killed around 5:30am on Thursday at a shisha bar named 360 Degree. Police believe that he knew his attackers.
The RAB later described Munna and Hamza as the “prime suspects”, alleging they intercepted Rabbi at the shisha bar and questioned why he was there before an argument escalated.
