Law Advisor Asif Nazrul has expressed concern over what he described as an “alarming” number of bail orders being granted by the High Court within a short period.
He made the remarks after meeting outgoing Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed on Thursday.
Drawing attention to the bail of Faisal Karim Masud, a suspect in the attempted murder of Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi, the advisor warned of the potential risks such judicial decisions pose.
“We feel profoundly alarmed, panicked, and worried by this type of bail. A dangerous individual might receive bail and subsequently carry out attacks on the heroes of the July Uprising,” he said.
He noted that the law ministry holds no control over High Court decisions.
“There is no question of control. The High Court’s supervision lies with the chief justice.”
Nazrul said he had gone to the Supreme Court to convey greetings to Chief Justice Refaat on his last working day.
“The chief justice assumed responsibility at a very critical moment for the nation. He has played the role of guardian in implementing judicial reforms aimed at fulfilling the expectations that emerged from the Uprising,” he said.
He added that many of the laws enacted through the ministry had been supported by Chief Justice Refaat.
The advisor said, “Let me share one point. Discussions are ongoing. Some benches of the High Court are issuing unusual bail orders. I had previously shared my concerns with the chief justice and did so again [on Thursday].
“On multiple occasions, I informed him about benches granting 800 bails in just four hours. He took measures and summoned the benches involved. He has acted according to his judgment,” he added.
