The British High Commission in Dhaka has issued a travel advisory warning of potential terrorist attacks in Bangladesh.
The notice, published on Tuesday, highlights the risks of indiscriminate attacks in crowded areas, religious sites, and political gatherings.
The high commission cautioned that certain groups might target individuals whose lifestyles or opinions they perceive as opposing Islamic values.
It also mentioned previous attacks on religious minorities, police, and security forces, often involving explosives in major cities.
“While Bangladeshi authorities are working to prevent planned attacks, sudden increases in security presence or movement restrictions may occur with little notice,” the advisory read.
Foreign nationals were urged to remain vigilant, particularly near police establishments, and avoid large gatherings and locations with significant law enforcement activity.
The advisory also referred to political unrest in July and August, which resulted in widespread violence, fatalities, and injuries across the country.
Although the situation remains “unstable,” political marches and rallies persist, which could rapidly turn into violence or clashes with the law-enforcing agencies.
The high commission warned of nationwide incidents of vandalism, arson, and lethal violence during protests and strikes.
The advisory also said that recent unrest has affected police operations, with several stations damaged and not all personnel returning to duty.
Criminal activities, including armed robbery, violent crime, and gang operations in Dhaka and other cities, were also flagged.
The advisory says that groups of criminals often engage in theft, typically using motorcycles or CNG-powered vehicles, while risks of armed robbery, violent crime, and sexual assaults remain a concern.
