The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Ataullah Abu Ammar Jununi, the chief of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), an armed group from Myanmar.
He was produced before the Narayanganj district court on Tuesday afternoon along with five associates in connection with two cases related to illegal entry into Bangladesh and terrorist activities.
The arrestees were produced in the court of Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Moinuddin Kadir and the judge granted a 10-day remand for each of them, said court police inspector Kaiyum Khan.
After the hearing, the court granted 10 days to interrogate each of the arrestees in two cases combined, five days per case, Kaiyum said.
Apart from Jununi, the remaining five accused are - ARSA members Mostaq Ahmed, 66, Moniruzzaman, 24, Salimullah, 27, Asmat Ullah, 24, and Md Hasan, 43.
RAB-11 Captain Lt Col AHM Sazzad said they had arrested 10 people in drives at Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj and Mymensingh’s Notun Bazar in the wee hours of Monday and Tuesday.
The court has remanded six of them. The remaining four arrestees are three women and a child, who were sent to prison after being shown arrested in the same cases.
RAB has filed two cases with Siddhirganj Police Station on charges of illegal entry, sabotage, and terrorist activities.
The accused have been handed over to the police station, an RAB official said.
Siddhirganj Police Station chief Shahinur Alam says RAB has seized Tk 2.14 million in cash, a knife, a sharp steel chain, and four watches from the arrested individuals.
On Sunday, law-enforcing agencies raided the 10th floor of the Garden City building at Notun Bazar intersection in Mymensingh city. Locals said several people were arrested.
However, they did not provide any information about the arrestees.
Several local residents said after the raid, law-enforcing officers identified the detainees as ARSA members.
On Tuesday, Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station chief Shafiqul Islam Khan said RAB contacted the police station from Dhaka and is preparing a case.
He added that details would be available once the case is filed.
In November 2022, a Military Intelligence Service (DGFI) officer was killed in an attack during an anti-drug operation at the Tambru border in Bandarban’s Naikhongchhari Upazila, where the main accused was Jununi.
