Police have filed a case naming 90 people for disrupting law and order during the ongoing protest movement against the redrawing of a parliamentary seat in Faridpur’s Bhanga.
Bhanga Police Station Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman filed the case under the Law and Order Disruption Crimes (Speedy Trial) Act, 2002, on Sunday. Another 150 unidentified people were also named in the case, said station chief Md Ashraf Hossain.
According to the case dossier, the accused gathered in the Swadi area of Algi Union on the Dhaka-Khulna highway on the morning of Sept 11, under the leadership of MM Siddique Mia, to protest the redrawing of the Faridpur-4 (Bhanga-Charbhadrasan-Sadarpur) constituency.
They barred regular traffic on the road, and created terror and obstruction by throwing large trees and flaming tyres on the road, and using intimidation and force to push for their illegal demands, the case documents say.
When law enforcers attempted to block them, they retaliated, but later fled the scene when they were chased.
On Aug 4, the Election Commission published the revised boundaries for all 300 constituencies. Under the new plan, the Algi and Hamirdi unions of Bhanga Upazila, previously part of the Faridpur-4 constituency, were shifted into Faridpur-2, which includes the Nagarkanda and Saltha Upazilas.
The changes sparked anger among locals, who demand that Faridpur’s constituencies remain unchanged. Protesters said they would not accept the inclusion of their areas in a different constituency. In protest, locals have blocked the Dhaka-Khulna and Dhaka-Barisal highways and the railway routes three times in the past five days.
This has caused severe suffering to the people of the 21 districts in the southern part of the country. Most recently, on Sunday, the protesters held a dawn to dusk blockade programme. They announced blockade programmes on Monday and Tuesday as well.
Bhanga Police Station chief Ashraf said, “Algi Union Parishad Chairman MM Siddique Mia, the chief coordinator of the Sarbadaliyo Oikya Parishad that has formed around the movement, has been named as the prime suspect and arrested.”
Earlier on Saturday night, police detectives apprehended Siddique from Chandhat Union in Nagarkanda.
“He will be produced before the court on Tuesday. In addition, raids are under way to arrest the other suspects,” said Ashraf.
Hamirdi Union Parishad Chairman Md Khokon Mia has been named as the suspect No. 2 in the case, according to police.
