A case has been started against the brother-in-law of a woman who was murdered along with her two children in Mymensingh's Bhaluka.

The victim’s elder brother Zahirul Islam filed the case on Monday, according to Bhaluka Model Police Station chief Humayun Kabir.

The key suspect, Nazrul Islam, is the younger brother of the woman's husband.

On Monday, police recovered the bodies of Moyna Akter, 25, her daughter Raisa Akter, 7, and son Nirab Hossain, 2, from a house in the Ponashail area of Bhaluka municipality. All three had their throats slit.

Moyna's husband, Rafiqul Islam, works as a labourer at Russel Spinning Mill in Bhaluka. He lived in a two-room rented house with his wife, children, and younger brother Nazrul.

Recounting his last conversation with Moyna, Rafiqul said: “I left for work around 8:00pm on Sunday. Around 10:30pm, I tried calling Moyna, but her phone was switched off. Then I called Nazrul’s number and spoke to her on his phone."

“When I returned home on Monday morning, the door was locked and the gate padlocked. I broke the lock with the help of the landlord and found their bloodied bodies inside. Nazrul was nowhere to be found. His phone is also switched off. He killed them all and fled.”

Rafiqul added that Nazrul had previously been jailed for two years in a murder case in Gazipur. He was released two and a half months ago after Rafiqul paid Tk 40,000 to secure his bail. Since then, the two brothers had been living together.

Humayun said the case also lists one or two unidentified people as suspects. Efforts are underway to arrest Nazrul, he added.
