Milon Mallik, accused of killing a schoolgirl in Banasree, has confessed to the crime in court, according to investigators.
Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Abdur Razzak of Khilgaon Police produced Milon in court on Tuesday, applying to record a voluntary confession.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain subsequently recorded Milon’s statement before he was sent to prison, said Prosecution Police SI Md Marufuzzaman.
Milon, 28, had worked at the restaurant owned by the victim’s father. He was arrested late Sunday night at Bagerhat’s Boro Singha by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The girl’s body, a 10th grader of Radiant School and College, was recovered Saturday afternoon from Block E, Banasree.
Her parents and younger brother were in their village in Habiganj at the time, while her elder sister Shobha Akter had gone to the gym. Returning home, Shobha discovered her sister’s throat had been slit and alerted the police.
Her father, Md Sajib, filed a murder case with Khilgaon Police on Saturday night. Though the complaint mentioned one or more unknown individuals, no suspect had been named.
The family suspected Milon, as CCTV footage showed him entering the house before the body was recovered. He was subsequently arrested by RAB.
The court received the case documents on Sunday, with Magistrate Raju Ahmed accepting the complaint and ordering the investigation officer to submit a report by Feb 19.
According to the case details, the family runs a restaurant -- Shahjalal Hotel -- where Milon had regularly visited for work.
RAB-3 commander Lt Col Fayezul Arefin said Milon admitted to the killing during initial questioning.
Milon had reportedly made “immoral proposals” to the girl repeatedly, and on the day of the crime. When the girl refused his advances, he strangled her with a nylon rope and slit her throat with a kitchen knife.
Milon also admitted rifling through the house and taking some cash before fleeing, officers said.
