Shariatpur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Ashraf Uddin has accused a woman of blackmailing him for a large sum of money after intimate videos and photos of the two spread across social media.
The scandal, involving private footage, has triggered conflicting claims between the two--who are also related by family ties--and has since drawn wide public attention.
The woman has alleged that the DC lured her into a romantic relationship by promising marriage and was instrumental in the breakdown of her previous marriage.
“He’s my close relative,” she told a news-based YouTube channel. “Our relationship began as he used to visit our home. He convinced me to divorce my husband with the promise of marrying me.
“Now he refuses to marry and is threatening to kill me. He’s destroyed my family and my reputation.”
Responding to the allegations, Ashraf claimed she had tried to extort money from him. “She used the relationship to trap me and demanded a huge sum. When I didn’t pay, she began leaking our old photos and videos online,” he said in a phone interview.
He added that there had been attempts to settle the matter through a lawyer.
“When the blackmail peaked, she asked for an amount I couldn’t afford. She then got in touch with a lawyer in Shariatpur to push for the money,” Ashraf said.
The Ministry of Public Administration later issued an order on Saturday night placing Ashraf as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in Dhaka.
Following the order, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Aslam Hossain confirmed the DC had gone on leave.
“Sir is not at the office. As far as I know, he applied for leave and it was approved by the commissioner,” he said.
The lawyer involved in the mediation, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the woman first reached out to him, claiming Ashraf had promised to marry her but later pulled back.
The lawyer said he initially proposed marriage as a resolution. The woman declined, fearing she would be abused or abandoned after marriage. Instead, she demanded a one-time payment of Tk 50 million.
“When that didn’t work, she proposed a monthly allowance of Tk 100,000. She also threatened to release their videos if the money wasn’t paid,” the lawyer said.
He confirmed that Ashraf eventually gave her some money.
Ashraf admitted to making regular payments. “Since my posting as DC, she kept pressuring me. I was forced to send money to her account every month. She blackmailed me while leaking everything publicly,” he said.
“I will now discuss legal steps with my lawyer.”
Ashraf joined as Shariatpur’s DC on November 2024.
Before that, he was director at the Neuro-Developmental Disability Protection Trust after qualifying through the 27th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) exam.
