A group of leaders and activists of the Awami League, whose political activities are banned, have staged a procession outside the party's Noakhali office after breaking a lock at the main gate and putting up a banner.

The incident occurred around 7am on Wednesday on the main road in Maijdee town. Police later removed the banner at about 10am after being informed.

Sudharam Model Police Station chief Md Touhidul Islam said five people were detained from in front of the office.

Residents said the Noakhali Awami League office had been set on fire and vandalised by protesting students and locals on Jul 4, 2025, a day before the student-led mass uprising that ultimately toppled the party from power began. The main gate was subsequently locked.

On Wednesday morning, several activists identifying themselves as grassroots Awami League supporters gathered outside the office. Witnesses said some of them were affiliated with the banned Jubo League and Chhatra League.

At one stage, they broke the lock, entered the premises and hung a banner reading “Noakhali District Awami League Office” at the main gate before chanting slogans and bringing out a procession.

The incident drew attention from locals, many of whom recorded videos on their mobile phones and shared them on social media.

“Early in the morning, a few people from the banned Awami League hung a banner and brought out a procession at the office. The banner was removed shortly afterwards, and five people were detained,” said OC Touhidul.

He added that legal action would be taken over the incident.
