A BNP leader has been killed in a machete attack in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur, according to police.
Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident that occurred in Taj Mahal Road around 11:30am on Monday.
The victim, identified by his first name as Mintu, 25, was the treasurer of the BNP’s Ward-29 unit No. 3 wing.
Two others were injured in the attack.
After the attack, Mintu and his companions Tuhin Jamaddar, 30, and Zahirul Islam, 40, were initially taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. They were later transferred to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), where Mintu died around 5:30am on Tuesday, Mohammadpur Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Hafizur Rahman said.
Following the incident on Monday, Tuhin’s wife Tulu Akhter lodged a case initially under charges of “assault”. After Mintu’s death, police said the case will now be reclassified as a murder case against seven people, with additional unidentified suspects.
Following the filing of the case, police arrested 23-year-old Jalal and 45-year-old Nilufa Akhter.
Mintu, Tuhin, and Zahirul, residents of Mohammadpur’s Aziz Mahalla and Taj Mahal Road, came under the attack while returning home from a BNP event at Mohammadpur Town Hall, police said, citing the case documents.
According to the case statement, while returning by motorcycle, the trio stopped in front of Kisholoy School on Taj Mahal Road upon seeing a crowd. Tuhin approached someone he knew at the scene named Jalal to ask what was going on.
“As they were about to leave, Jalal and his associates from the crowd attacked them. They stabbed Tuhin in the abdomen, while Mintu and Zahidul were seriously injured by machete blows.”
Plaintiff Tulu said, “All the attackers are involved in drug trade.”
