Md Ali Hossain Fakir has assumed office as Bangladesh’s inspector general of police (IGP), a day after the government announced his appointment.
Police Headquarters said in a statement on Wednesday that Fakir formally took over from outgoing IGP Baharul Alam in the morning.
Fakir joined the Bangladesh Police on Nov 15, 1995 as an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) through the 15th BCS (Police) batch.
Over his career, he has served as superintendent of police in Netrokona, Feni and Magura. He also held key positions including commandant of the Rapid Response Force (RRF) in Sylhet and commander of the 3rd Armed Police Battalion (APBn) in Khulna, 5th APBn in Dhaka and 7th APBn in Sylhet.
As a deputy inspector general (DIG), he worked at Police Headquarters and in the Special Protection Battalion (SPBn).
According to the statement, Fakir also represented Bangladesh Police in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Ivory Coast.
He is currently the acting president of the Bangladesh Police Service Association. He has travelled to several countries, including the United States and China, for official duties and professional training.
Fakir serves as general secretary of the 15th BCS Forum and convener of the 15th BCS (Police) batch. He is also associated with various socio-cultural organisations, including the Officers’ Club Dhaka and Khulna Club.
He holds Honours and Master’s degrees in management, as well as an MBA from the University of Dhaka.
Born on Apr 5, 1968, in Bagerhat, Fakir is married and has two children.
Earlier on Wednesday, a police contingent gave him a guard of honour upon his arrival at Police Headquarters.
