The High Court has granted bail to former Begum Rokeya University vice-chancellor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
His lawyer says there is currently no legal bar to his release, as no other cases are pending against him.
The order came on Sunday from a bench of Justice Md Atowar Rahman and Justice Biswajit Debnath.
Speaking to bdnews24.com after the hearing, lawyer Syed Mamun Mahbub, who represented the bail petition, said: “We secured bail today, and it is not an interim order. After hearing all parties, the court made the rule absolute. That means his bail has been confirmed following a final hearing.”
“As the rule has been made absolute, there is no legal obstacle to his release on bail.”
Asked about other cases, the lawyer said: “He has only one case, the ACC case. Currently there is no other legal obstacle. The law also says that a person cannot be repeatedly shown arrested in the same manner.”
Under a previous directive of the court, Kalimullah will have to surrender his passport.
His lawyer said they would comply with that order.
The case was filed in June last year by ACC Assistant Director Minhaj Bin Islam of the commission’s Integrated District Office Dhaka-1, accusing Kalimullah and four others of irregularities in a special university development project.
Kalimullah was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police at his residence in Mohammadpur on Aug 6.
His bail petition was rejected the same day and he was sent to jail.
He was later placed on a five-day remand in the case.
The ACC has alleged “irregularities and misappropriation” involving nearly Tk 40 million in the construction of Sheikh Hasina Hall and the Dr Wazed Miah Research and Training Institute building at the university during Kalimullah’s tenure.
A professor in the public administration department at the Dhaka University, Kalimullah served as vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University from 2017 to 2021.
