Dhaka, July 6 (BDNEWS) – Newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Anwarul Iqbal Thursday said the country has been passing through a crucial time, especially in the political arena and garments sector.
Briefing media persons at the police headquarters soon after assuming his charge, the IGP expressed his apprehension that certain quarters might take attempts to make the situation worse during the Caretaker Government.
During the briefing, Iqbal, who was the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner during the last Caretaker Government and the first Director General (DG) of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), sought cooperation of the media as well as the people to combat crimes and criminals.
Replying to a query, the IGP rejected the allegation of politicisation and corruption in police saying, "I have been hearing the same allegation since I joined the Bangladesh police 33 years back."
He, however, said that he would try to keep the police free from politicisation and corruption. Besides, drives against corruption in police are on and it would be strengthened, he said.
The new IGP also appreciated both the RAB and the police for their success in combating militancy, extremism and crimes. He also claimed that the country's anti-crime forces are more efficient than their counterparts in many other countries.
Anwarul Iqbal said 30,000 more police forces would be appointed during next five years and more police stations be set up.
During the press briefing, immediate past IGP Abdul Quaiyum, who was attached with the establishment ministry, and other senior police officials were present.
Former IGP Abdul Quaiyum claimed that Bangladesh police have been made more dynamic during his tenure and various steps taken for its modernisation.
He added that a proposal has also been sent to the establishment ministry for overhauling of the police headquarters as well as the Bangladesh Police.
