Police have sought a week to question gangster Subrata Bain’s daughter in their custody in the murder case of Jubo Dal leader Arif Sikder.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman has fixed Thursday to hear the remand petition filed on Tuesday by Mazharul Islam, an inspector at the Detective Branch.
Arif Reza, a sub-inspector of the prosecution police, confirmed the matter.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Khadiza Yasmin Bithi, the daughter of Subrata aka Md Fateh Ali, on Monday at the main entrance to the Cumilla Central Jail.
Khadiza and her father considered Arif their rival as the father and daughter sought to establish supremacy over the Moghbazar and Hatirjheel areas, police said in their plea.
The suspect needs to be questioned, police said.
Arif was shot and killed on the night of Apr 19 near a restaurant at Hatirjheel. He was a Jubo Dal leader at 36 No. Ward in Dhaka North City Corporation.
Subrata was arrested in connection with the case filed over Arif’s death by his sister Rima Akhter, accusing 10 people.
Subrata was arrested along with Molla Masud on May 27 during a pre-dawn operation by the Bangladesh Army in Kushtia.
The Army reported seizing five foreign-made pistols, 10 magazines, 53 rounds of ammunition, and a satellite phone during the raid.
Police records show Subrata was listed in 2001 by the Ministry of Home Affairs among 23 top criminals, with cash rewards offered for information leading to their arrests.
He led the infamous “Seven Star Group”, accused of widespread extortion, murder, and armed robbery in the early 2000s before fleeing to India.
Subrata returned to Bangladesh after Aug 5, 2024, following the ousting of the Awami League government, and resumed criminal activities. Police allege the gang regularly held meetings and stockpiled weapons at a house in Hatirjheel owned by Sharif, where the later arrests were made.
