One of the eight people arrested over the murder of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin in Gazipur is a woman named Parul Akhter alias Golapi, police have said.
Golapi’s husband, Faisal alias “Ketu Mizan”, was also apprehended from the city’s Bhabanipur area on Tuesday night.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) has described him as the “mastermind” behind the killing.
Based on video footage and initial interrogations of the suspects, police believe the incident began with Golapi and that she originally works as a “honey trapper”.
As part of a premeditated plan to gain financially, she targeted garment worker Badsha Mia after spotting him with Tk 25,000, eventually provoking an argument with him.
At that point, Faisal and others, who had been lying in wait, appeared instantly with weapons and attacked Badsha, according to GMP.
Though injured, Badsha managed to run away.
Journalist Tuhin, who was nearby, filmed the incident. Police say he was hacked to death because the attackers saw him recording the video.
GMP Additional Police Commissioner Zahidul Hasan told bdnews24.com that Badsha is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in the city.
Police spoke to him, and based on his statement and the video analysis, Golapi was arrested, the officer said.
According to police, Golapi is from Jamalpur’s Melandah Upazila. She and Faisal live in the city’s Chandona Chowrasta.
Earlier, 38-year-old Tuhin was hacked to death in the busy Chandona intersection around 8pm on Thursday. Police arrested a total of eight people over the incident by Saturday.
He worked as a staff reporter for the Dainik Protidiner Kagoj in Gazipur and was a resident of Chandona.
He left behind his wife, Mukta Akhter, and two sons, Taufiq, 7, and Fahim, 3.
Bason Police Station chief Md Shahin Khan said two cases have been filed in connection with Tuhin’s death.
Tuhin’s elder brother, Md Selim, filed a case against unidentified individuals over the incident, while the other was filed by Badsha’s brother.
On Friday morning, Tuhin’s autopsy was completed at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue.
After Friday prayers, his funeral prayers were held at the Eidgah ground in Chandona Chowrasta, the spot where he was killed.
He was later buried in his village home in Mymensingh.
‘TARGET FOR TK 25,000’
Speaking at a GMP briefing on Saturday, Police Commissioner Nazmul Karim Khan shared details about Golapi.
He said the first victim, Badsha, withdrew Tk 25,000 from a local ATM booth on the day of the attack. Seeing this, Golapi tried to lure him into a “honey trap”.
Badsha realised he was being targeted at one stage of their conversation. This led to an argument, during which Badsha punched Golapi, as captured on CCTV footage.
The police commissioner said immediately after Golapi was punched, up to six of her accomplices rushed forward and started attacking Badsha indiscriminately with machetes.
Badsha, however, managed to escape by running away.
Additional Commissioner Zahidul said, “At that time, journalist Tuhin was nearby and recorded the attack on his mobile phone camera. The armed assailants noticed this.
“They then chased Tuhin, caught him, and pressured him to delete the video. When Tuhin refused, the attackers assaulted him.
“At one point, Tuhin ran into a grocery store next to Eidgah market for shelter, but they followed him there and hacked him with sharp weapons before slitting his throat to ensure his death and fled.”
He noted that parts of the attack were later found on nearby CCTV cameras, leading to the identification of eight suspects.
