Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has directed BNP lawmaker Tahsina Rushdir Luna to submit a formal written notice to the home minister seeking action regarding the disappearance of her husband, the prominent BNP leader Ilias Ali.
The speaker said in parliament the "murder" Ilias will not go unpunished.
The speaker's remarks followed a "point of order" raised by government Whip Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu, who cited recent media reports claiming that Ilias was killed and his body dumped in the Dhaleshwari River.
Dulu alleged that the former lawmaker and BNP organising secretary was picked up by RAB-1 from Banani on Apr 17, 2012, before being murdered.
Calling the murder “a crime against humanity", Dulu said:"If he were alive today, he would be sitting with us in this parliament. From what I have learnt, he was killed between Apr 17 and Apr 20, 2012."
Dulu said the disappearance and subsequent killing could not have happened without direct order from former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Hafiz described Ilias as a "popular political leader" and a dear colleague.
"His murder will not go unpunished. This parliament and the home minister will certainly play a significant role in this regard," the speaker said.
He urged Tahsina, the member of parliament for Sylhet-2, to formally move the home ministry.
He also noted that the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is already processing similar cases of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings from the previous regime.
Ilias was never heard from since he was picked up along with his driver, Ansar Ali. His disappearance is one of the most sensational cases of enforced disappearance from the Awami League era.
