A theft has taken place at a gold jewellery shop in Chandrima Market of Mohammadpur, Dhaka, where the thieves took away a chest from the shop.

The incident occurred around 3:15am on Monday at a shop named New Rana Jewellers.

According to police, the shop owner complained that 816.2g of gold and 6.99kg of silver were stolen. The thieves removed and took away the shop’s chest, which contained most of the gold and silver.

The shop owner also reported that Tk 400,000 in cash was stolen.

Owner Masud Rana told journalists that he had closed the shop and returned home around 11:00pm on Sunday.

“When I came to open the shop at 10:00am on Monday, I found the collapsable gate and shutter locks broken. After entering, I saw everything vandalised, including the chest. All the gold and silver were kept inside the chest and in the display showcases,” he said.

Masud Rana claimed that the shop had 583g of his own gold and 233.3g of mortgaged gold.

“Also, 6.99kg of silver and purchase receipts for gold were also stolen,” he added.

He estimated the value of the stolen items as follows: 816.2g of gold worth approximately Tk 15.4 million, and 6.99kg of silver worth Tk 2.16 million, along with Tk 400,000 in cash.

Confirming the incident, Masud Rana, additional deputy commissioner of police (Tejgaon Division), said that multiple police teams have begun investigating the theft.

Meanwhile, CCTV footage shows that around 3:21am, several individuals entered the shop, broke the glass, and removed the chest.
