Members of the Awami League, barred from all sorts of political activities, have hoisted the party flag at its Khulna office.

They also placed floral wreaths at portraits of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina.

The event took place on Sunday afternoon at the district and metropolitan Awami League office at Lower Jashore Road’s Shankha Market.

Khulna Sadar Police chief Kabir Hossain confirmed the details.

According to witnesses and local business owners, activists unlocked the collapsible gate on the ground floor and proceeded to the first floor.

“Once inside, they hoisted the national flag, paid tribute to images of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and ousted premier Sheikh Hasina, and shouted ‘Joy Bangla’ slogans.”

Footage of the incident quickly went viral on social media.

Since the fall of the Hasina government on Aug 5, 2024, Awami League offices across Khulna city and the wider district have been subject to numerous attacks and vandalism.

The city and district headquarters had already been ransacked and set on fire by protesters on Aug 4.

Following the departure of the Awami League supporters on Sunday, witnesses reported that a separate group of people arrived and vandalised the office once again.

They reportedly set fire to doors and multiple documents.

Their identities, however, could not be confirmed.

Confirming that legal actions will follow, officer Kabir said: "Police have recovered CCTV footage from the surrounding area."
