Dhaka, Oct 16 (bdnews24.com)—The Department of Environment (DoE) on Tuesday fined a real estate company Tk 3.2 million for erecting a 30-storey commercial building without securing environmental clearance.
Borak Real Estate (Pvt) Limited completed the 27 storeys of the structure at Kamal Ataturk Avenue at the capital's Banani.
The DoE in a media statement said its Director (Enforcement) Mohammad Munir Chowdhury also ordered a halt to the construction,
The building project, named Banani DCC-Unique Complex, is located on a Dhaka North City Corporation-owned land. But Borak Real Estate was tasked with the construction.
The release said the company will be allowed to resume construction only after it gets an environmental clearance certificate.
Munir Chowdhury said the realtor should have taken the clearance certificate according to the Environment Preservation Rules, 1997 before starting the construction.
He said the construction agreement only mentioned a 14-storey building.
A hearing on the matter took place in three phases on Sunday and Monday at the DoE office.
