Civil Aviation Minister Rashed Khan Menon told bdnews24.com that he had seen the e-mail from Haywood, in which he said he was resigning.
"It is not something sudden. He has been irregular for a while without explaining why. We have asked him to explain more than once but never got a clear explanation. Today, he sent his resignation via e-mail," Menon said.
The government brought in Kevin Steele as the first foreign CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines in 2013 to make the national flag carrier more competitive.
Steele, a former British Airways official, had thirty years of experience in global aviation when he joined Biman as CEO.
When Steele resigned in early 2014, Biman was run by an acting CEO for a while.
In September 2014, fellow Briton Kyle Haywood was appointed as managing director and CEO of Biman. He joined in January 2015.
Haywood had worked for British Airways, Etihad, Gulf Air, Air Arabia and a few other airlines before he joined Biman.
Like Steele, Haywood has also quit within a year of taking charge.
Who after Haywood?
Civil Aviation Minister Menon said Wing Commander M Asaduzzaman (retired) will now work as acting MD until a fresh selection process is initiated to find a successor to Haywood.
"Our board will interview prospective candidates," he said.
