Dhaka, March 2 (BDNEWS) – A bill imposing a provision of two years' imprisonment and fine of Tk 3,000 for not registering a marriage was passed in the Parliament Wednesday.
The Muslim Marriages and Divorces (Registration) (Amendment) Bill 2005 made mandatory informing a nikah registrar within 30 days of a marriage if it is solemnised by anyone other than a registrar.
If the nikah registrar is not informed the conduct will be considered as a punishable offence. The bride could be awarded a punishment of two years' imprisonment and a Tk 3,000 fine.
After the President assents to the bill and it becomes an act, registration of a marriage will be mandatory.
Law Minister barrister Moudud Ahmed hoped that it will also discourage early marriages.
