Dhaka June 7 (bdnews24.com)-- Lt Gen Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, an infantry officer who is currently Quarter Master General, will be the new Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh, a Bangabhaban source said.
The source told bdnews24.com that President Md Zillur Rahman, the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, signed the order on Thursday.
Lt Gen Bhuiyan, who is almost certain to be promoted to Four-Star rank when he takes over on June 25, served as a UN Force Commander and held important commanding positions including the GOC of the Savar-based 9th Infrantry Division and the Chief of General Staff. He also headed the Defence Services Command and Staff College.
He will succeed Gen Abdul Mubeen, who was scheduled to go into retirement on June 15 after three years as head of the army, but will now leave office on June 25 according to a presidential order.
"The President today gave Gen Mubeen a 10-day extension," Shafiul Alam, the Secretary to the President, told bdnews24.com Thursday afternoon.
A cadet of the 3rd BMA Short Course, Bhuiyan went to Faujderhat Cadet College and was commissioned in the army in Nov 1976.
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in May 2010.
