Authorities have decided to lift the ongoing curfew in Gopalganj and reimpose Section 144 from Sunday morning, prohibiting gatherings across the district.
District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Kamruzzaman announced that Section 144 will be enforced from 6am to 8pm on Sunday, according to a media statement issued by the district administration.
The order, issued under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, prohibits all kinds of gatherings, processions, and public assemblies during the period.
Examinees, students, government employees, and those involved in emergency services will remain exempt from the restrictions, the statement read.
Executive Magistrate Russell Munshi told bdnews24.com that the curfew, which began at 8pm on Saturday, would remain in place until 6am Sunday.
Once lifted, Section 144 will come into effect immediately and stay in place until 8pm.
Earlier, in response to widespread clashes and violence, authorities had imposed a full curfew across Gopalganj.
It was briefly relaxed for 14 hours before being resumed from Saturday 8pm to Sunday 6am.
Despite the relaxation, movement in the town remained limited during the curfew break, with few residents venturing out.
On Wednesday, the town descended into chaos after the National Citizen Party (NCP) leaders and activists arrived for a rally as part of the party's ongoing “July March”.
The event triggered a violent response from alleged Awami League activists, culminating in back-and-forth chases and clashes between protesters and law enforcers.
Four people died during the five-hour clashes, with a rickshawpuller succumbing to gunshot wounds in a Dhaka hospital on Thursday night.
The NCP leaders, who had taken shelter at the district superintendent of police’s office during the violence, were later escorted out of the town in armoured Army vehicles.
The interim government initially imposed a curfew from 8pm Wednesday to 6pm Thursday, but later extended the restrictions indefinitely.
The home ministry announced that the curfew would remain in effect until further notice, with a three-hour break from 11am-2pm on Friday.
Later on Friday afternoon, the district administration extended the curfew until Saturday morning.
