Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has urged candidates and political parties to place the nation’s interests above partisan considerations once the election is over.
In a televised address to the nation on Tuesday evening, two days before polling, he called on all sides to accept the outcome in a democratic spirit.
“Just as victory is part of democracy, defeat is also an inseparable truth,” he said. “After the election, let us work together to build a new, just, democratic and inclusive Bangladesh.”
Yunus reaffirmed that the interim government would hand over power to elected representatives as soon as possible.
“Rest assured, the interim government will complete its duties by transferring authority to the winning representatives at the earliest opportunity,” he said.
Encouraging citizens to vote with confidence, he urged people to go to polling stations with their families and take part in the ballot peacefully.
“Cast your precious vote and open the door to a new Bangladesh. The key to the country is in your hands. Use it wisely,” he said, ending with a prayer for guidance.
Remembering those who died in the Liberation War and July Uprising of 2024, Yunus said the sacrifices of citizens had made both the election and the accompanying referendum possible.
“The nation remains forever indebted to them,” he said.
He noted that the election’s outcome would have far-reaching consequences, shaping the country’s future political direction and the sustainability of its democratic institutions.
Yunus also praised political parties for showing restraint during the campaign, candidates for responsible conduct and voters for remaining vigilant, saying the pre-poll period had been relatively peaceful.
The general election is scheduled for Thursday in a changed political landscape following the iprising. Voters will also take part the same day in a referendum on proposed amendments to the July Charter.
A Nobel laureate, Yunus assumed office as head of the interim government in August 2024 after the fall of the Awami League administration.
