Leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) have harshly criticised the interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus, accusing it of “delaying” the prosecution of the ousted Awami League (AL) and its leaders.
The newly formed party's Convenor Nahid Islam said, “The boat symbol must be wiped out from Bangladesh.
“The Awami League's organisational and political activities must be banned by law during trial.”
The party, composed of student leaders of the July Uprising, also alleged the Election Commission formed by the interim government is “not working to uphold the people's aspirations”.
After holding torchlight processions in Dhaka's wards for the past month demanding a ban on the AL, the NCP's Dhaka Metropolitan unit held a rally at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque on Friday.
In the last 15 years, only AL usually held political programmes there.
Around 20 central leaders of the NCP spoke at the rally.
Nahid said, “We have to take to the streets demanding a ban on the AL, even though 9 months have passed since the July Uprising. I consider this our collective failure.
“Our promise to the nation was to ensure justice for the fascism and tyranny of the past 16 years.”
Highlighting the situation, Nahid said: “In the past 16 years, the Awami League has stolen votes and taken away people’s voting rights.
“It defeated the patriotic section of the Bangladesh Army through the Pilkhana massacre.
“The 2013 Shapla Square massacre took away scholars’ rights to express their opinions. They have also continuously suppressed the quota reform movement and the anti-Modi movement.
“They used police, army, and BGB to shoot at the people in the July movement.
“They’ve turned into a fascist organisation.
“It’s unfortunate the state failed to take responsibility for the families of the July martyrs.
“Meanwhile, those arrested are getting bail, and the AL is being re-established at the grassroots level with backing from various political groups.”
He added, “The Election Reform Commission recommended barring those involved with the AL and genocide from contesting. Whose interests are the EC protecting?
“The UN report proves the July-August genocide and crimes against humanity were organised on Sheikh Hasina’s orders.”
Nahid said, “Bangladesh achieved independence through a bloody struggle.
“The aspirations of an independent Bangladesh were thwarted through the 1972 Mujibist constitution.”
NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain said, “The AL, which has terrorised the people of Bangladesh, committed crimes against humanity, and repeatedly imposed genocide on Bangladesh, has no right to do politics.”
