A head-on collision has derailed two coaches of the Lalmoni Express after the train drove into the Burimari Commuter train near Lalmonirhat Railway Station.

Despite the impact, which slightly damaged the track, no injuries were reported in the incident on Monday.

According to railway officials, the accident occurred around 2pm when the Lalmoni Express, having just arrived from Dhaka and emptied its passengers, was moving towards the workshop for routine cleaning.

At the same time, the Parbatipur-bound Burimari Commuter No. 66, which was carrying passengers, entered the station from the opposite direction on the same track and struck the express train.

Train movement on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari route was temporarily suspended following the accident but resumed shortly after, said RMB Benazir Ahmed of the railway’s security department.

“No passenger has been harmed. Police have been deployed for security and rescue operations are under way,” he added.

Rashidul Islam, a local trader near the BDR Gate area, said the commuter train struck the Lalmoni Express just before it entered the workshop.

Army personnel from the Lalmonirhat camp quickly arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.

Divisional Mechanical Engineer Tazin Hasan said an investigation would be conducted to determine whether negligence was involved.
