A Dhaka court has set the date of the verdicts in three cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and daughter Saima Wazed Putul on charges of graft involving 30 katha of land in the Purbachal New Town Project for Thursday.
The court of Dhaka Special Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun scheduled the date after the prosecution and defence concluded their arguments on Sunday.
Suspect Mohammad Khurshid Alam was brought to court from jail for their decision.
Advocate Khan Md Moinul Hasan Lipon represented the ACC at the hearing. He petitioned the court to sentence the suspects in the case to life in prison, the maximum punishment.
“We hope for the maximum punishment, life in prison, for the suspects. We hope that is the verdict the court will deliver,” he said.
Lawyer Shahinur Rahman presented his arguments on behalf of Mohammad Khurshid Alam, the former member of RAJUK (Estate and Land) and the only suspect in custody. He argued that the case against his client had not been proven and moved the court to acquit him.
Witnesses completed their testimonies in the case on Nov 10. Then, on November 17, Khurshid pleaded his innocence in the cases.
On Jul 31, the court framed charges and began trials in six cases, including these three against Hasina and 23 other people – including seven members of her family.
The other family members accused in these cases are Sheikh Rehana's daughter and British MP Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, son Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby, and another daughter Azmina Siddiq.
The other defendants are former state minister for housing and public works Sharif Ahmed, former senior assistant secretary of the Ministry of National Housing and Public Works Purabi Golder, former RAJUK Chairman Anisur Rahman Miah, former member (development control) Shafiul Haque, former member (planning) Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Nayeb Ali Sharif, Saiful Islam Sarkar, Kazi Washi Uddin and Shahid Ullah Khandaker.
The ACC filed these six cases in January on charges of corruption in plot allocation. Chargesheets in all these have been filed in court. Arrest warrants have been issued against Hasina and her family members as they are absconding.
The chargesheet states, "While holding the highest position in the government, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her family abused the power vested in them. Despite the fact that they were not eligible for the allocation, six plots on Road 203 of Sector 27 of the Purbachal Housing Project were allocated for dishonest purposes."
