The Department of Fire Service and Civil Defence has formed a five-strong committee to investigate the fire at the import cargo complex of Shahjalal International Airport.
Shajahan Sikder, media officer of the Fire Service, said on Monday that the committee has been asked to finish the investigation and submit its report within 15 working days.
The committee is headed by Lt Col Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, director of the Fire Service’s Operations and Maintenance, and includes four other officers:
Md Abdul Mannan, deputy director of Fire Service Dhaka Zone-3
Md Nahid Mamun, senior station officer of Kurmitola Fire Station
Md Tozammel Hossain, warehouse inspector of Dhaka-19
Md Saleh Uddin, deputy director of Dhaka Division
The fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at the Cargo Village of the airport. With the combined efforts of 37 Fire Service units, police, Ansar, RAB, APBn, the Air Force, and the Navy, the blaze was contained shortly after 9pm.
Separate investigation committees have also been formed by the Internal Resources Division of the finance ministry, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, and Biman Bangladesh Airlines, which manages ground handling at the airport.
Lt Col Tajul said on Sunday afternoon, 27 hours after the fire started: “After receiving news of the fire on Saturday, our 37 units worked tirelessly. By 9:18pm, we had it under control, and at 4:55pm on Sunday, we declared it fully extinguished.”
In the wake of several major fires across the country in recent days, the government has also formed a seven-member “core committee” led by the home secretary. It has been asked to submit its report by Nov 5.
