Dhaka, Sep 29 (bdnews24.com)— Hours after expressing his willingness to head the poll-time government senior lawyer Rafique-Ul Haq held a two-hour long meeting with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday night.
bdnews24.com Chief Political Correspondent Sumon Mahmud saw Rafique went to Khaleda's residence at 8:10pm and came out at 10:10pm.
He later told bdnews24.com that they did not discuss politics. Rafique said he went there to console the death of Khaleda's younger brother, Sayeed Eskander.
Rafique, who was the Attorney General during the regime of military-ruler Hussein Mohamad Ershad, had accompanied Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her recent visit to the northern region of the country. Jatiya Party chief Ershad, a key ally of the ruling coalition, was also with them during the visit.
The senior lawyer was the talk of the day for his remarks at a programme that he was willing to head the caretaker government, if asked to do so.
On a question what he would do if he is asked to head the poll-time government, he told reporters, "Don't ask me embarrassing questions. But since you are asking me, I will say it ... if that sort of an occasion comes, I am willing to take all the responsibilities for the country and the two parties."
He also said that he would 'initiate steps' to have the Prime Minister and the chief of the ruling Awami League, Sheikh Hasina, and the BNP Chairperson, Khaleda Zia, to sit across the table over the caretaker government issue "for the sake of people".
"Let me speak to them. I do not believe that the two leaders do not love the country or do not believe in democracy. I am supposed to meet one of them today. Talking to the other is also possible," Rafique said.
He represented both the leaders, Hasina and Khaleda, in the court during the 2007-8 military backed emergency rule.
