A Dhaka court has placed two brothers, Sajib Bepari and Rajib Bepari, on a five-day remand in police custody for questioning in connection with the grisly murder of scrap trader Md Sohag, who was bludgeoned to death near Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka.
On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia passed the order after hearing a petition from the investigation officer, Kotwali police Inspector Md Moniruzzaman.
The inspector had sought a seven-day remand for each accused.
When asked by the court if they had legal counsel, the two brothers replied that they did not. Rajib told the magistrate, “Sajib Bepari is my elder brother. I didn’t do anything. I am innocent.”
After the hearing, the court granted five days’ remand for each suspect for interrogation.
Police had arrested Sajib and Rajib from Netrokona on Sunday, four days after Sohag was killed in a brutal daylight attack near Gate No. 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, sending shockwaves around the nation.
According to police, he was bashed with a concrete block in a gruesome attack. The killing is believed to have stemmed from a business dispute and longstanding rivalry.
The graphic footage of the incident, widely circulated on social media, drew national outrage and condemnation.
Locals and police said those involved in the attack were all known to Sohag. Some were reportedly his former business associates. Following the incident, Sohag’s elder sister filed a murder case with Kotwali police, naming 19 people. So far, police have arrested seven of the accused.
Among them is Tarek Rahman Robin, who was formally shown arrested in the murder case on Monday. Earlier, Robin had been remanded for two days in a separate arms case, following his arrest on Thursday.
On Saturday, after completing the remand, Robin gave a confessional statement in court in the arms case. He was then shown arrested in the murder case.
Sub-Inspector Tanvir Morshed Chowdhury of Kotwali police’s prosecution wing confirmed the development.
Robin has denied involvement, saying: “I wasn’t at the scene. I got caught up in this. They arrested me on suspicion. My life is over. My mother is ill with diabetes. I have nothing more to say.”
