UK Human Rights Ambassador Eleanor Sanders is visiting Dhaka to discuss rights issues and democracy.
The British High Commission in Dhaka announced her arrival on Monday in a press release.
The media statement said the UK reiterates its commitment to supporting Bangladesh in upholding human rights and democracy during the visit of the human rights envoy.
Sanders will meet with several advisors and senior officials of the interim government, as well as individuals and partners working on human rights protection.
The British High Commission says, “The UK has a long-standing commitment to promoting and protecting human rights in Bangladesh and globally.
“Since the formation of the interim government, the UK has been supporting the restoration of law and order, ensuring accountability and establishing the rule of law.”
Ambassador Sanders will discuss justice and accountability, human rights and fundamental freedoms, the High Commission said.
The press release said Sanders will deliver a speech on human rights at a seminar at Dhaka University.
She will also engage with students, discussing media freedom, freedom of religion or belief, and minority protection.
The British human rights envoy will also visit the Rohingya refugee camp in Cox's Bazar to observe various projects supported by the UK government, including food distribution, women's health, education, and LPG distribution.
Sanders will also announce a new UK government grant to the UN High Commission for Human Rights to strengthen accountability for human rights violations.
The statement quoted her as saying the UK strongly supports the interim government in implementing sustainable, long-term reforms that respect human rights and promote growth.
"We believe my visit will further strengthen UK-Bangladesh cooperation on key issues, such as accountability and justice, freedom of religion or belief, media freedom, gender equality, and labour rights.
“We will further strengthen our multilateral partnership with Bangladesh, which is currently a key member of the UN Human Rights Council.”
British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke said, “I am delighted to welcome the UK High Commissioner for Human Rights, Eleanor Sanders, to Bangladesh.
“This visit demonstrates the UK’s deep friendship with Bangladesh and its long-standing commitment to building a more prosperous and democratic future for the people of Bangladesh.”
