The per capita income in the Dhaka District has risen to $5,163, almost double the national average of $2,820, according to new research by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI).
The findings were revealed in the chamber’s newly published Economic Position Index (EPI) report, which aims to measure quarterly changes in the country’s economic activity.
Presenting the findings at a ceremony on Saturday, DCCI Secretary General AKM Asaduzzaman Patwary said Dhaka alone accounts for 46 percent of Bangladesh’s total GDP and 40 percent of total employment.
In May, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) said the national per capita income reached a record $2,820 in the 2024-25 fiscal year, up by $82 from the previous year’s $2,738.
Before that, the highest average income was $2,793 in FY22.
While BBS routinely publishes national income data, it does not release district-level figures. The new research from DCCI provided the first indication of Dhaka’s economic position.
According to the DCCI, Dhaka alone generates 46 percent of the country’s GDP and provides 40 percent of total employment. It is also the hub for 40 percent of Bangladesh’s total exports.
The quarterly EPI is designed to assess economic activity, tracking changes in Dhaka’s trade environment, sector-wise performance, and overall financial conditions. For the latest index, DCCI surveyed 365 manufacturers and 289 service providers in February.
