Dhaka, Feb 18 (bdnews24.com) -- The Anticorruption Commission Sunday released a list of 50 people, mostly politicians, who face allegations of corruption.
ACC said the listed people have to submit wealth statements in 72 hours from notification. In failure, their property can be seized.
The corruption watchdog made the move under an amended Emergency Powers Ordinance, designed to plug the so-called loopholes of law and ban corrupt politicians from contesting the polls.
"This is the list of corrupt people. We are investigating the allegations against more people. That list will be published soon," ACC secretary Delwar Hossain told reporters.
At least 21 people on the list have already landed in jail. Joint forces have widened the hunt for more.
Asked to comment on a raft of allegations against former prime minister Khaleda Zia's son Tarique Rahman, Delwar said: "I won't comment on the things that are under investigation."
"We will take action against all who have been named with allegations of corruption in newspapers."
The government will not seize the property of organisations or companies, owned by the listed 50, where many work for production, he said.
"An administrator will be deployed instead to run such a company or organisation," he said.
In a statement, ACC said the listed people or their representatives have to inform the commission in 72 hours from notification about sources of income and movable and immoveable property.
Delwar said the notice for wealth statements would be reached to the addresses of the listed people by Sunday evening.
According to the amended Emergency Powers Ordinance, conviction for corruption will bar politicians from contesting the elections.
The new legal step is part of the government's broader efforts to tighten the Emergency Powers Ordinance.
The amended ordinance does not allow the Supreme Court to grant bail to the accused or halt the verdict on any corruption case by the trial court when the appeals are under review at the Appellate Division.
The SC has to dispose of the appeals in 90 days from the day of filings.
