Before the break of dawn, an earthquake has hit the southwestern border district of Satkhira, with the impact being felt in different parts of Bangladesh.
The quake struck at 4:36:46am on Tuesday, according to Farzana Sultana, assistant meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s Seismic Monitoring Centre.
The epicentre of the quake was in Kalaroa, one of the Upazilas bordering India, and 175km south-west of Dhaka. It is considered a light earthquake, registering at magnitude 4.1 on the Richter scale.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre said that the epicentre was 16km northwest of Satkhira and 36km from the Habra Municipality in the North 24 Parganas district of India’s West Bengal. Its depth was 150km.
Satkhira journalist Mehedi Sohag said he felt a sudden tremor in the house in the early morning. He then realised that it was an earthquake.
The sudden jolt spread panic among the locals, he said.
