The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has announced traffic restrictions in and around Manik Mia Avenue on Tuesday to accommodate daylong programmes marking the anniversary of the July Uprising that led to the fall of the Awami League government.

The announcement came through a public notice on Monday.

According to the notice, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs will organise a series of cultural performances and a drone show on the avenue as part of “July Uprising Day”.

The events will begin at 11am and continue until midnight.

Key events include musical performances by different artists from 11am, a symbolic performance titled “Celebrating the Fleeing of the Fascists” at 2:25pm, the publication of the “July Proclamation” at 5pm, a special drone show at 7:30pm, and a performance by the band Artcell at 8pm.

Due to the large turnout expected outside the parliament, police have said it will not be possible to allow regular traffic through that section of the avenue.

Diversion points and alternate routes: Aarong Crossing (western end of Manik Mia Avenue): Vehicles arriving from the north via Mirpur Road or from Mohammadpur via Asad Gate going towards Khejurbagan or Farmgate can’t turn left at Aarong crossing.

Instead, they should continue south via the eastern end of Dhanmondi-27 and merge to Mirpur Road.

Similarly, vehicles coming from the south or Science Lab crossing on Mirpur Road heading towards Khejurbagan or Farmgate can’t turn right at Aarong Crossing.

Instead, they should continue north and turn right at Ganabhaban Crossing, then follow Lake Road-Aeroplane crossing-Bijoy Sarani crossing.

Khejurbagan crossing (eastern end of Manik Mia Avenue): Vehicles from the elevated expressway via Indira Road heading towards Dhanmondi can’t merge straight onto Manik Mia Avenue.

Instead, they should turn right at Khejurbagan crossing, take a left at Aeroplane crossing, and go through Lake Road and Ganabhaban crossing before heading south on Mirpur Road.

To avoid congestion, authorities have recommended that vehicles from the elevated expressway bound for Dhanmondi or Mohammadpur use the FDC (Hatirjheel) ramp instead of the Farmgate exit.

Farmgate crossing: Vehicles heading towards Khejurbagan, Manik Mia Avenue or Mirpur should avoid turning left at Farmgate and instead continue straight to Bijoy Sarani, then turn left via Aeroplane crossing and Lake Road.

Ganabhaban crossing: Vehicles arriving via Mirpur Road from the north and heading towards Farmgate or Sonargaon should not continue south from Ganabhaban crossing.

Instead, they should turn left to take Lake Road-Aeroplane crossing-Bijoy Sarani crossing, and then head towards Farmgate.

Vehicles from Mohammadpur via Asad Gate heading to Khejurbagan or Farmgate should turn left at Asad Gate and then right at Ganabhaban crossing to proceed via Lake Road-Aeroplane crossing-Bijoy Sarani crossing.

Syed Mahbub Morshed Road (Agargaon to Shishu Mela): Vehicles planning to pass through Manik Mia Avenue are advised to use this alternate road.

Visitors at the event are also requested to park their vehicles at the old trade fair grounds in Agargaon.

The interim government has officially declared Aug 5 as July Uprising Day, commemorating the fall of the Awami League government after a mass movement on this day in 2024.

The movement, which began in July last year with students demanding reform of the quota system in government jobs, ultimately led to the fall of the government as deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India.
