Prof Muhammad Azad Khan has applied to step down from his role as director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE), citing health reasons.
He submitted the request to the secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division on Tuesday, a day after the ministry called for applications from interested senior education cadre officers to fill the post.
Efforts to reach both Prof Azad and Secretary Rehana Parveen for comment were unsuccessful.
A senior officer at the division, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the DG’s resignation application has been formally submitted and recorded at the secretary’s office.
In his written request, Azad said: “Due to health-related issues, it has become difficult for me to continue performing my duties. Therefore, I am requesting to be relieved from the post of director general."
On Monday, the division issued a notice inviting applications from education cadre officers of BCS batch 26 and above, holding the rank of professor, who are interested in taking over the role.
Applicants have been asked to apply offline within seven working days, with a complete résumé.
The notice said candidates must be “honest, responsible, and efficient” in administrative work, with a “proven track record” in education and training.
DSHE, a key department under the Ministry of Education, oversees and manages the country’s secondary and higher secondary education system.
It operates through nine regional offices and their district-level education offices.
Azad was appointed to the position on Feb 20 this year.
