Naval police have recovered the body of a young man from the Buriganga River beneath Bosila Bridge in Dhaka.

Additional Superintendent (ASP) of Dhaka Region Naval Police Mahfuzur Rahman said the body was recovered at around 5pm on Sunday.

Police believe the body found may be that of a student of Jahangirnagar University based on a student identity card found in the victim’s pocket.

“The body was found floating in the river. The face and abdomen were swollen and deformed after being in the water for a long time, making immediate identification difficult,” he told bdnews24.com.

“However, we are trying to identify the deceased using the recovered items.”

Police said a student identity card, several documents, and an Android mobile phone were found in the victim’s pocket.

According to the identity card, it belonged to Dip Mozumder, a 50th-batch student of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Jahangirnagar University.

Admit cards for his second-year and third-year honours examinations were also recovered.

ASP Mahfuzur said police contacted a family member using a phone number found among the recovered documents.

“The person who answered identified himself as Dip’s father and said his son had been missing since Friday. The identity can be confirmed once family members arrive at the scene,” he said.

When contacted by bdnews24.com around 7pm, a man identifying himself as Dip’s father said he was on his way to the site after receiving the news.

Police are preparing to send the body for an autopsy and have launched an investigation to determine the cause of death.
