Jamal Uddin, the father of slain lawyer Saiful Islam Alif and the plaintiff in the murder case, has testified before a Chattogram court, seeking justice and the swift completion of the trial.
Chattogram Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Zahidul Haque recorded his testimony on Monday afternoon.
The state-appointed counsel for one suspect cross-examined the complainant.
The court has fixed Feb 18 for the next date for hearing the case. The lawyer for Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari demanded time before cross-examining the witnesses.
“The plaintiff has sought justice for the murder of his son,” said SUM Nurul Islam, public prosecutor.
The plaintiff's lawyer Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury said the entire country was closely following the case’s proceedings and that a quarter was trying to stall the case.
Chinmoy’s lawyer Apurba Bhattacharya said they were waiting for the High Court to pass a decision on the appeal to discharge his client from the case.
“We have sought time before we start cross-examination of the witnesses,” he said.
The trial in the case began on Jan 19 with the indictment of 23 suspects, including Sammilita Sanatan Jagaran Jote, or United Hindu Awakening Alliance, spokesman Chinmoy on Jan 19.
On Nov 26, 2024 supporters of Chinmoy protested in court following the rejection of his bail in a sedition case. Police dispersed the demonstration with stun grenades after two and a half hours, and during the resulting commotion on Court Road near Rangam Convention Hall, Alif was attacked, beaten, and fatally stabbed.
Alif’s father filed the murder case on Nov 29, 2024, with Kotwali police, naming 31 individuals and 15–16 unknown persons. All suspects resided in Bandel Road Shebok Colony near Rangam Convention Hall.
After investigations, Assistant Commissioner Mahfuzur Rahman of Chattogram Metropolitan Police submitted a chargesheet on Jul 1, naming 38 suspects, with Chinmoy Das as the prime suspect.
On Aug 25, the court accepted the charge sheet in the presence of the complainant, now listing 39 suspects.
The case was sent to the Speedy Trial Tribunal on Jan 7.
