Traffic restrictions have been imposed on roads around Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka to allow for the funeral prayers of former prime minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Swathes of people from across the capital and other parts of the country are gathering in the area to attend the prayers on Wednesday.
The Chief Advisor's Office has urged the public to avoid using Mirpur Road to reach Manik Mia Avenue in order to ease congestion and ensure the smooth conduct of the funeral.
In a post on social media, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus said preparations had been completed to allow people from all walks of life to pay their respects and take part in the funeral prayers without disruption. He added that arrangements were also being made for members of the public to stand on roads surrounding Manik Mia Avenue.
In a separate statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said vehicle movement would be restricted from 8am at several locations across the capital, including the College Gate junction near Residential Model College, the IDB Bhaban intersection and Bijoy Sarani as part of arrangements for Khaleda's burial with state honours.
Pedestrian access will remain open and people have been urged to plan their movements accordingly.
Extensive security measures have been put in place in and around Manik Mia Avenue and the Parliament complex. All mourners are being directed to enter the avenue through the archway gate at its eastern end.
Khaleda's coffin will be placed on a stage at the western end of Manik Mia Avenue, where funeral prayers will be held after Zuhr prayers. The same site hosted the funeral of her husband, former president Ziaur Rahman, in June 1981.
Following the prayers, she will be buried with full state honours beside her husband’s grave at Zia Udyan around 3:30pm.
