Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad’s wife Prof Dilara Hafiz has been presented with her a final floral farewell.
Her body was taken to the South Plaza of the National Parliament from 12pm to 12:45pm on Monday.
Khan Md Nurul Amin, secretary of the President’s Office, first laid a wreath on behalf of President Mohammed Shahabuddin on the coffin wrapped in black cloth. Then Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid his respects.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman and Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal then presented wreaths separately. Led by Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, Whips GK Gouse, Rakibul Islam, Mia Nuruddin Ahmad Apu, Ruhul Quddus Talukder, Akhtaruzzaman Mia and ABM Ashraf Uddin Nijon paid tribute. Officials of the Parliament Secretariat, led by Secretary Kaniz Moula, also laid flowers on the coffin of the deceased.
On behalf of the ruling BNP, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir placed a wreath on the coffin of the deceased. Earlier, Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal, Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman, Chief Whip of Parliament Nurul Islam Moni, and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul had spoken on the occasion.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin expressed his gratitude to all in attendance and solicited prayers for the salvation of his spouse’s departed soul.
Later, a funeral prayer was held for the deceased. Prime Minister Tarique, Speaker Hafiz Uddin, Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman, Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal, cabinet members, and members of parliament participated took part.
After the funeral prayer at the parliament premises, the coffin of the deceased was taken to the Central Jama Mosque in the Cantonment. Dilara will be laid to rest at the Banani Military Cemetery following another funeral prayer at Cantonment Central Jama Mosque after Zuhr prayers.
Dilara died last Saturday while undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital; she was 78 years old. Her body reached Dhaka the next day.
Dilara was born on Jan 2, 1949, in Sunamganj to Mohammad Abul Hossain Chowdhury and Karimunnessa Khatun Chowdhury.
She earned a Master’s degree in history from the University of Dhaka in 1969 and began her career as a lecturer at Government Eden College.
She later served as principal of Eden College and Suhrawardy College, chairman of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board, and director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education.
